The Government last night refused to comment on the intervention by the British Prime Minister, Mr Blair, on the Parades Commission report. Other political parties in Leinster House were reluctant to make statements, saying nothing should be uttered that might exacerbate the situation.
However, sources said there was surprise in Government circles at the timing of Mr Blair's intervention, given that the commission report was anticipated and that a press conference had been called for its announcement.
The Sinn Fein president, Mr Gerry Adams, said he understood "to some degree" why the Prime Minister had intervened. "But I think it was unfortunate. I don't think it will help the situation," he added.
Suggestions that the Ulster Unionist Party leader, Mr David Trimble, had "put it up to him" [Mr Blair] were also unhelpful.
