DUBLIN SOUTH:FIANNA FÁIL candidate in the Dublin South byelection Shay Brennan has called for Fine Gael's national director of elections Frank Flannery to either resign or withdraw comments he made suggesting Fine Gael could work with Sinn Féin in the future.
Fine Gael has distanced itself from the remarks. Its leader Enda Kenny said Mr Flannery was expressing a personal opinion.
Mr Brennan said voters in Dublin South were ‘‘horrified’’ at the prospect of Fine Gael working with ‘‘an anti-business and anti-European party’’ like Sinn Féin.
‘‘Frank Flannery’s comments mean that Fine Gael is trying to have it both ways and achieve Sinn Féin transfers in these elections while at the same time Enda Kenny pretends he will have nothing to do with Sinn Féin,’’ the Dublin South candidate claimed.
‘‘Mr Flannery must now consider his position, he should step down or withdraw his support for a Fine Gael-Sinn Féin coalition government otherwise his party leader’s words will remain hollow.’’
