Are you ready for some space-age funk? If you are, vocalist Briana “Jack Davey” Cartweight and producer Brook D’Leau are open for business.

The time seems right for the Los Angeles-based duo J*Davey and their monster blend of funk, electro, soul, hip-hop and rock. They’ve spent the past four years knocking tunes into shape, doing the networking thing (gigs with Prince, inking a deal with Warner Brothers) and generally getting ready for lift-off.

There have already been a few releases to whet appetites and stir pundits into talking them up. For those in search of some J*Davey magic, The Beauty In Distortion/The Land of the LostEP is a good place to start (the latter featuring contributions from The Mighty ?uestlove of The Roots and Little Brother MC Phonte).

A new EP, Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapeis due in the coming weeks. This showcases the duo rocking a stronger, more confident electrofunk groove, if lead track Outta the Windowis any guide to their intentions.

J*Davey’s sound has taken some interesting turns over the course of those releases. While you can still find a touch of Santigold’s strutting in places, there are also elements of the Neptunes’ future-funk, Kelis’s sass and even the B52s’ way with a pop tune in their cosmic, freaky mix.

J*Davey’s songs are bright, breezy and pop-friendly, but also possess a smart, complex dynamic that the duo and their band are more than capable of exploiting in their live shows.

The most pressing thing on their to-do list for 2010 is to get that long-overdue debut album out and spread the love.

Hopefully, there will be enough room onboard the J*Davey spaceship for all the new recruits.
