Jackie Stewart in hospital
MOTOR RACING:Three times Formula One champion Jackie Stewart was taken to hospital yesterday after suffering chest pains on a flight from Switzerland to London, his office said.
“Jackie is in Hillingdon Hospital . . . after a physical setback on a flight back from Geneva to London Heathrow early this afternoon,” a statement added.
“He is fully conscious and having precautionary medical checks but we are expecting a full recovery.”
Stewart’s oldest son Paul said the champion had passed out on the flight.
“I’ve just spoken to him in hospital. He seemed absolutely fine but obviously something happened and we need to establish what,” he added.
The 71-year-old Scot won 27 grands prix during his Formula One career between 1965 and 1973, winning the championship in 1969, 1971 and 1973.
He also ran his own Stewart team from 1997-1999, winning one race.
Williams has emergency treatment for a blood clot
TENNIS: Serena Williams was recovering at her Los Angeles home after undergoing emergency treatment for a blood clot in one of her lungs, the former world number one confirmed yesterday.
“This has been extremely hard, scary, and disappointing,” Williams said in a statement. “I am doing better, Im at home now and working with my doctors to keep everything under control.”
The 29-year-old Williams fell ill on Monday and was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where she underwent surgery. Doctors discovered the blood clot after Williams travelled to New York last week for a treatment on a foot injury that has sidelined her for eight months, according to her spokeswoman Nicole Chabot. “Serena did indeed suffer from a pulmonary embolism last week and the hematoma was another unexpected scare,” Chabot said. “Thankfully everything was caught in time. She is recuperating at home under strict medical supervision.”
