A 37-year-old woman remained in Tallaght hospital yesterday suffering from smoke inhalation following a house fire in a west Dublin housing estate yesterday morning.

The woman, named locally as Christine Graham, became trapped on the upper floor of her house at Donomore Park, Tallaght, which was engulfed by fire early yesterday.

Neighbours were woken by Ms Graham's cries when she called for help from the upstairs front window shortly before 5am. An attempt was made to rescue her using a ladder however, fire fighters arrived on the scene a short time later and took over the rescue operation.

Three units of the Dublin Fire Brigade attended the blaze which was brought under control before it could spread to adjoining houses. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it is believed to have started in a downstairs front room.

Meanwhile, 30 people were evacuated from an apartment block in Salthill, Co Galway yesterday following a fire which broke out on the third floor of the building shortly after 7.30am.

Two units of the Galway Fire Brigade attended the scene at the Astoria apartments, a private residential block in Lower Salthill, at around 7.40am.

No one was injured, however all residents were evacuated as a precaution. The building sustained substantial fire and smoke damage and residents were unable to return to their homes last night.

A spokesman for the Fire Brigade said last night that the fire, which started in one of the third floor flats, was most likely caused by an electrical fault in the main fuse box and it was not thought to have been started maliciously.
