Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie is to open talks on a new contract.

Villa manager John Gregory had indicated he would have discussions in the summer over a new deal with Hendrie who is halfway through a five-year contract.

But Hendrie's agent will initially meet Gregory - who is also to have talks over a new contract with England defender Gareth Barry - in early February.

Hendrie has already hinted he will be signing for Villa for life.

He came through Villa's junior ranks.

The former England Under-21 cap said: "Since I showed an interest in signing a new deal there have been some developments.

"My agent is due to meet with the manager next month to try to get something set up. I don't know how long it will take but there is no problem from my point of view.

"I've got two more seasons left of my current five-year contract. I want a long-term deal. But I'd be happy enough if Villa wanted me to sign again soon. This is my club and I am a local lad - why would I want to leave?"

Gregory saw his latest transfer target - the prolific Spanish striker Javi Moreno - hit the target for Alaves against Las Palmas last night after flying out to watch the 26-year-old.

Moreno is also understood to have been watched by West Ham and Derby. He is also a Valencia target. PA
