With children nationwide returning to school today, booklets have been issued for parents of children attending primary and secondary school for the first time.

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation (INTO), which represents the majority of primary teachers, has launched a booklet for the parents of the 55,000 students attending "big" school for the first time.

Your Child in the Primary Schoolgives advice on health, hygiene, homework, bullying and other issues affecting junior infants. It was written by teachers and is being distributed to parents throughout the country.

The publication is a recognition of the importance of keeping parents informed about primary schools, said INTO president Ms Joan Ward.

"The partnerhsip of parents and teachers is essential to the well-being of the child, and we in the INTO believe that this booklet is just one way in which we can cement such a partnership," she said.

The main secondary teachers’ union, ASTI, in association with the National Parents’ Council, have produced a booklet aimed at students entering second-level education.

Introducing your Second Level Schoolwill be launched on Wednesday and is funded by the Department of Education and Science.

It is available to all parents of students entering second-level schools this year and will encourage them to play "a meaningful and supportive role in their child’s education".
