A group of surfers nearly lost their 4x4 to the sea yesterday after it got stuck in the mud in a Co Clare harbour with the tide quickly rising around it.

The incident occurred in Liscannor as the group tried to launch a jet-ski to take them to giant waves near the Cliffs of Moher at a spot known as Aill Na Searrach.

After launching one jet-ski, the Land Rover lost traction in the mud and got stuck.

The surfers tried to drive it out but eventually had to call on locals to help.

A farmer brought his tractor and tried to tow the 4x4 free, but it remained firmly stuck with the sea rising around it.

The group had to run the ropes in and out of the vehicle's windows. The men battled for almost an hour and with the aid of the tractor managed to free the vehicle.
