Hundreds of workers at Dublin Airport are to stop work from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. today in support of 150 British Midland staff who have been on strike for the past four weeks. The action is expected to affect a wide range of services, including shops, security, baggage handling and check-ins.
A spokesman for Aer Rianta said yesterday: "There may be some slight delays but we are asking customers to turn up on time for flights." The key group is the airport police and fire service, without whom the airport cannot operate.
The decision by British Midland to bring in about 90 staff from Britain has caused a lot of anger, although the company is entitled to do so.
The strike is over securing a better compensation package for British Midland staff transferring to Gatwick Handling International, which is taking over ground handling operations at the airport.
Today's solidarity action is unofficial and has not been sanctioned by the various unions at the airport.
