FREETOWN - Sierra Leone's military leader, Mr Johnny Paul Koroma, was sworn in as head of state yesterday and pledged to restore peace and eventually democracy to the war-weary West African nation.

Mr Koroma, who heads an Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) formed after junior officers who toppled the elected civilian president, Mr Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, on May 25th, was sworn in by Chief Justice Samuel Beccles Davies at a low-key ceremony.
