Riverside falls foul of the weather

Today’s Premiership match between Middlesbrough and Fulham, scheduled for a 3 p.m

Today’s Premiership match between Middlesbrough and Fulham, scheduled for a 3 p.m. kick-off, has been postponed for safety reasons, the Teeside club have confirmed.

Heavy snow around the Riverside Stadium caused the postponement of the match, the Middlesbrough website reported.

"Following a safety inspection of all routes leading to the stadium, including pedestrian access, it was decided it was unsafe to allow the game to continue," a statement said.

"It is very disappointing, especially as the pitch was perfectly playable, but certain seating areas were affected within the ground and, with the expected deterioration in the weather, there was no other choice but to call the game off."

However, Sunderland's home clash with Everton, which had been in doubt, was given the green light following a pitch inspection.

Wintry conditions in the north-east had put the match at the Stadium of Light under threat but the ground was passed fit following a 12.30 p.m. safety inspection.
