The outgoing Chief Justice, Mr Justice Liam Hamilton sat for the last time on the Supreme Court yesterday. He told the legal assembly who had gathered to pay tribute to him that "I hope to be remembered as someone who did what he could with what he had."

Mr Justice Hamilton pointed out he was echoing the words of a retired US Supreme Court judge, Herbert Marshall.

Born in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, in 1928, Mr Justice Hamilton celebrates his 72nd birthday and officially retires from the Supreme Court this weekend. Judges of the Supreme Court and High Court, as well as several retired judges, barristers, solicitors, friends and family members crowded into the Supreme Court yesterday for tributes led by the President of the High Court, Mr Justice Frederick Morris.
