A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs last night said it had been made aware of an alleged incursion into Co Donegal by a British army patrol based at Belleek, Co Fermanagh. She said the matter would be raised through the British-Irish Secretariat in Belfast.

Local residents said an eight-man patrol had crossed into Cloghore shortly after 8p.m.

The Fermanagh SDLP Assembly member, Mr Tommy Gallagher, said: "I have been in contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin and they assured me that it will be raised at an Inter-Governmental meeting on Monday."
