The total prize money on offer at this year's Dublin Horse Show will be €500,000, making it one of the top international shows in the world.

The 130th show, with new sponsors Samsung and Fáilte Ireland, opens on Wednesday, August 6th, and continues until Sunday, August 10th, at the RDS showgrounds in Ballsbridge.

This year's show was awarded its new super-status last December and is now one of only eight international shows to be included in the Samsung Super League.

This will see the best eight showjumping teams in the world battle it out: France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Holland and Ireland. There will also be individual riders from the United States and New Zealand.

The Dublin event should provide particular excitement for Irish lovers of showjumping as Ireland is already lying in second place in the super-league following the fifth competition in the series, which took place in Hickstead, England, last Friday.

Mr Gerry Mc Auliffe, director of Dublin Horse Show, described the event as the start of a new era with the show reverting to its original name, having dropped the "Kerrygold" tag as the Irish Dairy Board is no longer the main sponsor.

He said Samsung, the new sponsor, was one of the largest commercial organisations in he world and had been the sponsor of the Samsung National Cup Series for the past six years, bringing a new status to the competition.

Mr Christopher Kane, of Fáilte Ireland, said their sponsorship was based on funding from the International Sports Tourism Initiative Fund, awarded because Ireland attracted 67,000 equestrian tourists from overseas annually. He said this largely unnoticed sector generated €38 million in tourism revenue annually. The Dublin Horse Show, he added, was an ideal vehicle for the promotion of Irish as a quality tourism destination for equine activities.

Other new sponsors supporting the show this year will include ebookers.ie and Appleby Dublin, sponsoring Saturday's Puissance and Ladies' Day respectively.

A total of 1,500 horses and ponies from almost every county in Ireland will be at the grounds during the week competing in the record 94 showing and special category classes, both ridden and led, and 35 national jumping competitions for horses and ponies.

New in the showing section are classes exclusively for skewbald and piebald horses, to be ridden by over-14s, plus two equitation classes and an additional Connemara Pony ridden class.

The show will also feature the normal trade exhibitions, with 270 trade stands and an extensive antiques and art section in the Serpentine Hall.

The National Crafts Exhibition will also be the centrepiece of the renovated Industries Hall, with prize-winning pieces and works of excellence on display from the annual RDS National Crafts Competition. There will be live demonstrations of craft work every day during the show.

Other daily attractions include music, theatre and magic on the lawn and the Garda Band will perform on every day, except Thursday. There will also be evening jazz sessions.

The show will be formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mr Royston Brady, on Wednesday, August 6th. The daily adult admission is €13.

Senior citizens, children under 16 years and students will pay €9, and a family ticket admitting two adults and up to four children will cost €35.
