Sonia O’Sullivan, as expected, won the 800 metres title at the National Championships at Santry this afternoon.

O’Sullivan, who planned to use today’s event to sharpen her speedwork as she gears up to defend her 5,000m and 10,000 metres titles at the European Championships in three weeks, came home in a time of 2 minutes 4.89 seconds.

O’Sullivan was never seriously troubled and showed a clean pair of heels down the home straight to take her third national 800m title.

There also remains some speculation in Santry Stadium that the Cork star may run in the 5,000 event later this afternoon.
