An industrial dispute which threatened to close the Eason chain of shops throughout the State took a step towards resolution after SIPTU backed new pay proposals.

The union's national industrial secretary, Mr John Kane, said that it would be recommending acceptance of the offer, which included an increase of £40 per week in basic pay.

Balloting on the proposals will take place over the next two weeks and in the meantime industrial action has been deferred.
