Developers today lodged a planning application for a massive €500 million expansion of Liffey Valley shopping centre.
Some 4,000 jobs are expected to be created by the scheme, which promoters hope will be unveiled within five years and transform the area into a new town centre.
The project will include two department stores, 60 new retail units, a large supermarket and an 8,000 square metre civic square.
Denis O’Connell, Liffey Valley centre manager, said the square will be the focal point of the new development.
“The Civic Square will form a focus for the community where they can avail of excellent facilities and enjoy dining, leisure, entertainment, outdoor and cultural events,” Mr O’Connell said.
It is expected the construction phase will provide more than 2,000 jobs, with the majority drawn from the local area — Lucan, Palmerstown, Neilstown and Clondalkin.
The further 2,000 jobs will be created in civic amenities, retail, cleaning and security.
The planning application was lodged by Barkhill, a consortium including developer Owen O’Callaghan.
Liffey Valley Shopping Centre was opened in 1998 and attracts around 10 million shoppers every year.
