An Irish-based lottery player won almost €29 million on Friday night’s EuroMillions draw.
The winner matched five numbers and two lucky stars to win the €28,975,630 million jackpot.
It is the 11th time a EuroMillions jackpot has been won by a player base din the Republic.
Last January, a Dublin work syndicate scooped an €88.5 million jackpot.
The 12th-highest jackpot in the lottery’s history was won by Dolores McNamara from Co Limerick in 2005. She claimed €115 million.
Other Irish-based players have collected jackpot wins of €94 million, €29.4 million and €15 million over the years.
Rumours about the identity and location of the ticketholder abounded on social media on Friday night, an unsurprising course of events given that winners are usually keen to protect their privacy.
Friday night’s jackpot brought to €1 billion the total prize money won by Irish players since the competition was first introduced in 2004.
EuroMillions is played in nine countries – Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
