The family of Charles Haughey have been overwhelmed by the thousands of letters of support which have poured to their Kinsealy home since his death.

Eimear Mulhern, daughter of the former taoiseach, said the response from the public has been unbelievable.

"I have received so many most wonderful letters from people that I didn't know ever knew him or even heard of him," she said. "And in Kinsealy it's the same. "These are from people who actually met him, who knew him, who he did something for, people we never knew he knew, projects he was involved in, interests he had. It's just absolutely overwhelming."

Mr Haughey (80), died at his Abbeville home in north Co Dublin on June 13. He had battled against cancer for 11 years and also suffered from heart problems.

Mrs Mulhern, her mother Maureen, and brothers Conor, Ciarán and Fianna Fáil TD Seán were at his bedside when he died.

"He had been very very sick for a very long time but he wasn't going to give up," Mrs Mulhern told RTÉ Radio, speaking for the first time since her father's death.

"He was fighting it right up to two days before he died. He certainly lived a life to the full. In recent years it was difficult for him."

Mrs Mulhern said  that even after her father's death, many of his friends continue to visit the family home and her mother, who recently underwent a hip replacement.

"The house is still alive but there is definitely a big gap in it," said Mrs Mulhern. "Abbeville was very much him but the good thing for my mother is that there was always a stream of people calling to Abbeville through all the interests he had and all the good friends he had, and that hasn't stopped. People are still coming to see her."

Mr Haughey received a full State funeral in his north Dublin constituency of Donnycarney and is buried at St Fintan's churchyard in Sutton.
