Maths degrees

CHATTERBOX: What's the talk of education?

CHATTERBOX:What's the talk of education?

Are only people with maths degrees qualified? I know a guy with a PhD in physics and a H.dip who’s teaching maths. I presume he wouldn’t come under “unqualified” – or would he?

This has been a known problem for years. If you insist on teaching Irish and religion in schools and teaching an overly broad syllabus, then maths teaching is bound to suffer. One band aid would be to not have maths a must for LC. Out of a group of 90 kids there need only be one honours group and one pass group. Chances are the rest will get on in life if they can do sums.

Or just publish school mathematics league tables and let the parents decide.

If they are unqualified, they should be fired as they don’t meet the criteria for the job. Why protect them and train them? They don’t have a degree? Therefore, they should not be there. Stop protecting the workers that are not even qualified to teach. It is not fair on the good teachers who do well.

Ruth Canavan, Journal.ie

Why on earth would someone with a maths degree even want to go into teaching? They’d get a lot more money and, quite frankly, a lot more respect if they brought their degree to another profession.

SNA cuts protest

I’d be ripping if Shinners turned up to hijack a protest for a cause I believed in. Look at them – they’re not protest placards, they’re advertising hoardings. No “family taxes” – what does that even mean? Taxes for single people only?

oreieldude, broadsheet.ie

Presumably that the State shouldn’t penalise the “the natural primary and fundamental unit group of society” as per the Constitution. While housing and water taxes arguably don’t fall into the “family tax” group, SNAs do.

It is utterly disgusting what Ruairí Quinn and co are presiding over here. How disgusting to deprive little kids of SNAs. Of course, mouthing off about a complete f***ing irrelevance like Catholic school patronage should keep The Irish Times readership happy and away from this issue, won’t it?

SNA cuts undermine education, mean more expense in the future and are dwarfed by payments to unsecured bondholders

Junior Cert results

It’s evil that we have school the day after we get the Junior Cert results!

Hope the junior cert people get caught drinking like we did last year

I’m going to celebrate by going to rugby training and we’ll knock the bejaysus out of each other. Basically the same as going to Glenties tbh.

I’m going to a friend’s house for a small party, and it should be fun. I’m not too big into the whole disco thing. The idea of a cramped dancefloor with people jamming tongues down each others’ throats left, right and centre isn’t that appealing . . . Do you guys not think it’s a bit strange kissing various different people in one night? I’m a one-girl kind of guy.
