Gardaí will today search internal compartments on salvaged trawler the Pere Charles after the boat is lifted from the sea into a secure compound on the quayside in Arklow, Co Wicklow.

The vessel arrived off Arklow aboard the salvage barge MV Atlas yesterday evening after leaving Dunmore East in Co Waterford at 10pm on Thursday.

The badly battered trawler, which sank on January 10th with the loss of five lives, had been towed up along the east coast by the barge.

No bodies were found on board the trawler when it was searched by salvage experts when brought to the surface off Dunmore on Thursday afternoon. Relatives of those who died are still hoping some bodies may be inside the boat.

Another vessel, the Maggie B, which sank last year with the loss of two lives, had been brought to the surface on Monday.
