Debenhams have announced the loss of 170 jobs across its Irish operation.

The company, which employs 2,400 people in Ireland, are seeking 170 full-time equivalent redundancies across its 11 Irish stores.

A spokesman for the company said that it hoped the majority of job losses would be secured through voluntary redundancies.

The spokesperson confirmed that Debenhams were not considering any store closures adding that the company "want to open more stores and create more jobs".

He said that Debenhams remain "very committed" to its Irish operation, adding that they had spent €45 million in Ireland in the past five years.

He added that the group had begun a 30-day consultation period with staff, both on the job losses and on the implementation of "more flexible work practices" within the company.

There are a total of 2,400 people working in Debenhams' stores in Ireland, although some work for franchises located in its stores with 1,700 staff employed directly by Debenhams.
