Man pulled from nearby river after alarm was raised on Thursday afternoon

Gardaí have requested the services of the State Pathologist’s office following the discovery of the body of a woman in a burned out car in north Co Cork on Thursday afternoon.

The alarm was raised around 3.30pm when the body of the 72-year-old woman was discovered in a burning car in a wooded area between Doneraile, Castletownroche and Shanballymore in north Cork.

The fire services attended at the scene and extinguished the blaze but the body of the woman remains in the car pending the arrival of a pathologist.

It is understood the woman had lived locally.

A man (62), who was known to the woman, was later pulled from the Awbeg river in Castletownroche by gardaí.

The man, from Ardpatrick in Co Limerick, has been rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital and it is not clear how long he was in the water but it is believed that he is conscious but may be suffering from hypothermia.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Doneraile area between 3pm and 5pm, particular anyone with mobile phone footage or dashcam footage, to contact Fermoy Garda Station on 025-82100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
