THE Minister of State at the Office of Public Works is to go to Brussels today to seek compensation for flood victims in the south and south east. Mr Hugh Coveney will took for humanitarian aid for the victims of flooding in Clonmel and Carrick on Suir, Co Tipperary and in Co Cork, Co Waterford and Co Wexford.

The Department of the Environment has said it would not be paying compensation to those affected by the severe flooding in recent weeks.

The Fianna Fail leader, Mr Bertie Ahern, called on the Government to provide "reasonable compensation" to the families when he visited the worst hit areas on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Service said flood victims could look forward to a break in the bad weather this week, with dry weather, which should last for most of the week, predicted.

Almost two inches of rain fell over the weekend, with the south and south east of the country being particularly affected. It forced the cancellation of five FAI cup games and the Leinster Development League final between Terenure College and Lansdowne.

"Munster and south Leinster saw the worst of the weather over the weekend, with heavy rain adding to the problems of recent weeks," a spokesman for the Met Service said. "But the weather will settle down over the next few days and people in those areas can expect a big improvement with dry conditions," he added.
