Washington - The CIA yesterday rejected as "ludicrous" charges by a former general in the Italian secret service that it was involved in attacks which left more than 200 people dead in Italy in the 1970s.

In an interview published yesterday by the daily La Republica, former general Gianadelio Maletti said the US intelligence agency had brought in explosives from Germany for attacks in Italy to try to help stop the country's drift to the left.
