Police in Antrim are hunting for burglars who broke into a house and burned a pet dog.

The house on the Bourlon Road was broken into between 9.30 and 11.30 last night when the male occupant was out for the evening, a police spokeswoman said.

The West Highland terrier was burned by the burglars who turned on all four rings of a cooker. Police say they "cruelly and deliberately" placed the dog on the cooker.

The dog was treated by a vet and its injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Detectives in Antrim town are appealing for witnesses.
