£235,000 award for injured fire-fighter

A part-time fire-fighter who had a "terrifying and horrifying" experience when there was an explosion after a gas tanker overturned on a roadway was awarded £235,000 damages and costs by the High Court yesterday.

Mr Michael Sexton (49), Connolly Crescent, Longford, developed severe post-traumatic stress following the incident near Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, on the night of April 11th, 1995.

The award was against Longford County Council, which is responsible the local fire service.

It was claimed that when the tanker exploded Mr Sexton inhaled irritant gases or fumes and other airborne substances while assisting at the scene.
