Mirror contract for Irish print run

INDEPENDENT Newspapers is to print the Daily Mirror from the end of next month

INDEPENDENT Newspapers is to print the Daily Mirror from the end of next month. The one year contract could be worth around £800,000, according to industry sources.

The Daily Mirror will be printed in Terenure Printers, a wholly owned subsidiary of Independent Newspapers. It is competing strongly with the Star newspaper, which is 50 per eat owned by the Independent and half owned by the Daily Express. The Star is also printed in Terenure Printers.

"The Daily Mirror has established a strong position in Ireland and we plan to build on that success," the manager of Mirror Group, Cornel Riklin, said in a statement. "Printing in Dublin will provide us with a good base for further investment in the Irish edition of the Daily Mirror," he said.

Mr Michael Brophy, managing director of Terenure Printers, said the company would be installing a new press fax. The paper would be made up in Britain and faxed over, and Terenure would make the plates and print around 50,000 copies a day.

Mr Brophy would not reveal how much the contract is worth, but he aid the company was delighted to Terenure Printers currently prints the Ireland editions of the Daily Express, the Star, the Irish Farmers Journal and the Sunday World.

Mirror Group has bought the News Letter in Belfast for £7 million and is to invest another £7 million installing new colour printing presses there. It is believed that the group will transfer all printing of its Irish editions there when they are ready.
