Consumer Watch, the European Consumer Centre's (ECC) newsletter says the EU has adopted a directive extending to two years the minimum legal guarantee period for goods or services bought in any EU state. It will not be implemented at national level until January 1st, 2002 but represents a milestone towards affording greater consumer protection for all, says Consumer Watch.

"Under the directive, a consumer may demand a repair or replacement where a defect arises within two years of purchase. The exact remedy depends on the circumstances of each case. Where this is impossible, the consumer can demand a price reduction or rescind the contract. The guarantee period is limited to one year for second hand goods," says the newsletter.
