McCall spurs Bradford to draw

Bradford skipper Stuart McCall stooped to conquer with a vital last-gasp equaliser to end a run of three successive defeats.

Bradford skipper Stuart McCall stooped to conquer with a vital last-gasp equaliser to end a run of three successive defeats.

The inspirational McCall was in the right place at the right time, crouching as he knocked home David Wetherall's flick back from a Peter Beagrie corner in the fourth minute of injury-time.

It appeared as if Bradford were on course to make it four games in a row without a point and a goal when Tottenham's central defender Chris Perry finally broke Bradford's resistance in the 77th minute.

Goalkeeper Gary Walsh had stood defiant for Bradford with a colossal performance, only for his defiance to be broken when Perry rose at the far post to head home a David Ginola corner.

A draw is hardly the perfect tonic for Spurs manager George Graham and his side ahead of their UEFA Cup tie against Moldovan champions Zimbru Chisinau on Thursday.

Graham will have been left fuming with the way his side allowed Bradford to steal a point after Perry's first goal of the season.

Confidence looked at a premium as Spurs set out their stall in the hope of an early goal, one which could have broken the hearts of the home side.

But City gave a lesson in backs-to-the-wall defending, flinging themselves in front of anything and everything Spurs could muster.

It worked to tremendous effect during the first-half, especially in the opening 15 minutes when Valley Parade bore a resemblance to the Alamo - albeit with the visitors rarely able to get off a shot.

There were four corners in the first four minutes, but they all came to nothing and it appeared as if it would set the tone for a fruitless afternoon for Spurs.

Veteran Walsh, however, was the difference between just a one goal defeat and a potential rout as he produced five outstanding saves to frustrate Spurs for the majority of the game.

Early in the second half Walsh was at his best to tip over a stunning effort from Argentinean fullback Mauricio Taricco, while moments later Leonhardsen was denied via an equally athletic stop at the near post.

After Ginola had fired in an attempt as the Bradford defence surprisingly stood off him, the visitors finally found the goal their enterprising play deserved as Perry struck.

The young Spurs centre-back had only been denied moments later when Walsh could only tip on another Ginola corner to the far post for the defender to fire in from point blank range, but Gareth Whalley was on hand to clear off the line.

Despite the Spurs goal, Bradford's heads refused to go down and they came close to the equaliser in the 87th minute when Norwegian right-back Gunnar Halle saw his header also cleared off the line by Spurs' Stephen Carr.

But City's determination finally paid dividends in those dying seconds when McCall showed his forwards the way to goal - only his side's third of the season.
