Doran and Clarke make progress at Futures event

Tennis: Irish seeds John Doran, at number two, and Peter Clarke, at four, won through to the second round of the LTA $15,000 Futures tournament at London's Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club yesterday.

Doran was 3-0 up in the first set against Frederick Fetterlein when the Dane withdrew from the match injured. Clarke took control in the second set of his match with British qualifier Ben Huran to win 7-5 6-1.

And Karen Nugent won through to the women's $10,000 Futures qualifiers at the same venue beating Yael Glitzenstein 6-1 6-1. Elsa O'Riain, however, was defeated by Britain's Anna Hawkins 5-7 6-3 6-0.

Rugby: Leinster Schools recorded their third Argentinian tour victory on the trot by defeating Salta 48-6, scoring seven tries in the process. Wing Cathal Connolly put Leinster in front with a third-minute penalty before converting David Connellan's 16th-minute try. Lock David Gannon crashed over for a try after 27 minutesto leave Leinster 15-6 up at half-time.

Four minutes into the second half, Connolly rounded his opponent to score a well-worked try. Centre Killian Coleman scored Leinster's fourth try after 44 minutes. Strong pressure from the pack earned Leinster a penalty try after 45 minutes. Replacement full back James Donnelly and Killian Coleman added further tries in the 53rd and 70th minute.

Surfing: The Irish Surf team to attend the European Surfing Championships in Hossegor in France has been announced. Ireland's main hope for medals will rest with Brendan Gannon in the Open division and Bryan McAuley, ranked ninth in the world, in the bodyboard division.

Women's Hockey: Ireland made it three wins in three days against Wales in Cardiff yesterday when a Jenny Burke goal gave them a 1-0 victory in a 75 minute practice match. All 20 members of the squad were given a run-out in the game in which Ireland missed a stroke and had a string of scoring chances, but coach Riet Kuper was content with what she described as "a good work out". A recurrence of an old achilles injury to Karen Humphreys has delayed the naming of the 18 player squad for the training week in Holland.

Motor Sport: Italian Jarno Trulli has reached an agreement to remain with Jordan next year, his manager Lucio Cavuto said yesterday.

But Cavuto said Trulli must wait for a decision from Renault, who own his 2002 contract, before his position could be finalised.
