The future of council housing

Sir, – I advise a huge dollop of prudence to all those who plan to decipher the latest report on the future of council housing (“Tenant-purchase scheme ‘must end to meet social housing demands’”, News, July 4th).

At first glance the tell-tale indicators pop up as to what ideology may inform the report with recommendations to end the Council House Purchase Scheme, remove security of tenure to children, and (a staple of all such reports) build smaller house units for council tenants.

And any surprise evaporates completely when noting that the report was commissioned by Community Foundation for Ireland, whose board has a liberal sprinkling of those with strong associations with the banking and finance sector. – Yours, etc,

JIM O’SULLIVAN,

Rathedmond,
