Sir, - Did you notice the deep sigh of relief that rang through the country in the early hours of January 1st? The citizens had realised that Seamus Brennan and RTE would not be present to ruin the year 3000.

The 2000 series of events were woeful. If Oscars were awarded for the worst possible introduction to the new century RTE would be a runaway winner.

The Celtic Tiger produced a cub riddled with artistic flu. Not one event did anything but undermine the status of the nation. Some must ask how we produced Shaw, O'Casey, Beckett, Yeats, Behan and so on when a new era could produce such dreadful stuff.

Seamus Brennan, the presiding officer, should be put on the next non-returning rocket to outer space. Yet again, a Fianna Fail stunt has fallen at the first fence. A pity we have not got the Spike. It could be put to excellent use. - Yours, etc.,
