Officials from the Department of Agriculture and Food joined gardai at Border checkpoints over the weekend to supervise the disinfecting of every vehicle travelling into the Republic.

Since Saturday morning 100 major Border crossing points have had special mats containing disinfectant placed across the road.

The mats have been placed in the path of all vehicles travelling South and the disinfectant ensures that the wheels are made safe from any danger of transporting foot-and-mouth disease.

The mats are part of a programme designed to protect the farming industry in the Republic. Measures already in place include a ban on the importation of animals and animal products from the UK.

Meanwhile, a garda was recovering in hospital yesterday after being struck by a car that failed to stop at a checkpoint on the Monaghan Border.

Garda Julie Kenny (25) suffered hip and leg injuries when the driver of a BMW car drove at her after twice refusing to stop at a checkpoint at Drumacon, Castleblayney.

The incident happened at 4.20 a.m. on Saturday. The car was first driven from the Republic into the North after failing to stop as requested at the checkpoint at Drumacon.

A short time later the driver approached the same checkpoint from the Northern side and this time struck the garda before driving off.

The garda was on temporary transfer from Ballyfermot Garda station in Dublin as part of the garda clampdown on the disease.

Gardai in Castleblayney said they were following a definite line of inquiry and expected that criminal proceedings would be taken against the driver. It is believed he lives in Northern Ireland but is known to gardai in Co Monaghan.

At the Border crossing at Dromad, Co Louth yesterday, gardai said there was good co-operation from drivers.

All heavy goods vehicles were stopped and the trailers inspected for any kind of agricultural produce. No one was found to be breaching the Government measures.

The only agricultural-type vehicles allowed into the Republic had to have cleansing and disinfecting certificates that had been issued at the point where the last livestock was unloaded.
