Two Co Carlow men were charged at a special sitting of the Special CriminaL Court in Dublin today with membership of an illegal organisation.

Mark Doran (26), of Poachers Lock, Leighlinbridge and Patrick Dermody(20), of New Road, Leighlinbridge were each charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on October 26th.

Dermody was also charged with the possession of a double barrelled shotgun for an unlawful purpose at Garryhundon, Carlow, Co Carlow on October 25th. Detective Garda Robert Lackey of the Special Detective Unit, gave evidence of arresting Doran last night at Athy, Co Kildare.

Detective Sergeant Gerry Egan, Carlow, gave evidence of arresting Dermody in Carlow last night.

Both men were remanded in custody until next Wednesday when a bail application is expected to be made.
