The title refers to the fact that in Texan murder trials, there is a qualified doctor who recommends to juries whether or not the convicted person should suffer the death penalty. In the case-history described, the random killing of a 68-year-old woman by a 20-year-old hoodlum, plainly he deserved to do so. The book overall is a collection of topical articles with a strong accent on all-American crime, sex and scandal; subjects include Lee Harvey Oswald and the mysterious death of Mary Meyer, President Kennedy's semi-official mistress. A good, ghoulish read if you can put up with the relentless nudge-you-in-the-ribs style.
