Investigators from Iarnrod Eireann were yesterday examining the scene of a collision between the Dublin-Waterford train and a hedge-cutter in north Co Kilkenny at about 9.20 a.m.

A spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann confirmed none of the train's 29 passengers was hurt in the incident, which happened near Shankill, Paulstown, Co Kilkenny, about three miles from Bagenalstown. He said neither the line nor the train had been damaged.

The operator of the machine jumped clear before impact. He had been employed by Iarnrod Eireann to trim hedges near the track.
