TORRENTIAL RAIN in Cork early yesterday caused severe disruption in the city and many areas of the county.

Hayes Lane in Monkstown was partly washed away by rain causing rubble to flow down the road.

Four vehicles were stuck in the middle of the laneway and could not be moved because gravel from the road had lodged underneath them.

Throughout the county, Carrigtwohill, Midleton, Cloghroe and Carrigaline were some of the areas worst affected while the north side of Cork city was also particularly hit by the heavy rain.

Between 7pm on Sunday and 7am on Monday, the Met Éireann branch in Cork airport recorded 18.7 millimetres (.736 inches) of rainfall.

Flooding was reported on the Dunmanway/Macroom road in Cork.

Yesterday afternoon’s race card at Cork was called off due to waterlogging. Flooding also caused delays in Co Cork around Cloghroe Church and Hop Island.

Water overflowing from the Inniscarra Dam also caused considerable difficulties in that part of the county.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Cork Fire Service said practically everywhere in the city and county was affected by the surface water and every effort was being made to manage the situation.
