THREE MEN have been charged in connection with the death of a father of three following an incident in Gorey, Co Wexford, at the weekend.
James Doyle (40) from Gorey died in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin yesterday from injuries sustained during the incident in the early hours of Saturday.
Another man, Neil Doyle (26), was injured in the same incident.
The men appeared at Wexford District Court yesterday charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to James Doyle. They were also charged with assaulting Neil Doyle.
Artus Janovskis (23), Mantis Kriksciunas (18) and Roman Muhins (19) were remanded in custody until November 19th to appear at Cloverhill courthouse.
The men are understood to be from Lithuania and Latvia, but all have addresses in Gorey.
Garda Damyanj Jaksic told the court he arrested Mr Muhins on November 14th, at 8.45pm at Ramsgate village and later charged him at Enniscorthy Garda station. When the charges were put to him, he replied: “I don’t know what to say.”
Garda Brian Dignam said he arrested Mr Janovskis yesterday morning and took him to Gorey Garda station where he was charged. He was not represented in court.
Garda Dignam also gave evidence of having arrested Mr Kriksciunas. In reply to the charge relating to James Doyle, Garda Dignam said the defendant said: “I don’t like when somebody calls my mother a bitch and calling me a f***ing foreigner.”
In reply to the charge of assaulting Neil Doyle, he replied: “I was just saving myself.”
Garda Dignam said Mr Doyle had been taken off the life support machine in Beaumont Hospital and had died early yesterday. He said the charges before the court would be later withdrawn and a more serious charge preferred.
Garda Insp Paul Sargeant said gardaí were objecting to bail as at least one of the defendants intended leaving the country.
Solicitor Ed King, for Mr Kriksciunas, said his client was due to leave for home on Sunday evening. However, he had no warrant and had no previous convictions and this arrangement was in place prior to the incident.
Peter Creane, solicitor for Mr Muhins, said his mother was prepared to put up bail. He had no previous convictions and was prepared to surrender his passport.
