Three men have died in separate accidents, bringing the number of fatalities on the State's roads so far this year to 45.

In Dublin yesterday afternoon, a cyclist was killed after being struck by a lorry at the junction of East Wall Road and Annesley Bridge, Ballybough. The man (32) was taken to the Mater Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 4 p.m.

In Co Tipperary, Mr Joseph Troy (57), from Cloughjordan, died when the car he was driving struck a horse at Lisboney, about three kilometres north of Nenagh, on Monday evening. Two other occupants of the car escaped serious injury

Meanwhile, gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a dead man in a car in a ditch at Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, yesterday morning.

Mr Alan Smith (35) was discovered at around 9 a.m. by a passing motorist. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was removed to Roscommon Hospital for a post-mortem.

It is thought the car had fallen into the ditch, and was not easily visible from the road.

Gardaí said they did not suspect foul play, and were treating the death as a road accident.
