The author is an actress-cum-lecturer in Eng Lit, which gives her special qualifications for dealing with Beckett; but while her book presumably will prove extremely useful both to students and to prospective actors, it is the reverse of easy reading. In fact, it is often so specialised that large tracts are almost impenetrable to a non-specialist reader. The discussion of typescript variants and drafts and the use of tables and diagrams make it both verbally and visually forbidding. Essentially a work for the university or faculty library, or for actors and dramatic societies.
