Siemens is in line to win a lucrative contract to expand Afghanistan's telephone land-line system.

Afghanistan minister for telecommunications Mr Abdul Rahim said Siemens is his government's preferred bidder for the project.

Mr Rahim told Germany's Handelsblattthe first stage of this order would be worth over $40 million. "Siemens can build up a digital system, if it at the same time repairs the existing analogue system" he said.

According to Handelsblatt, 22,000 customers in Kabul are connected to the analogue network and 12,000 connected to the digital network.
