One man is missing and a second is in a critical condition in hospital following an incident on a lake in Co Cavan.
A Garda spokesman said four people in a small boat got into difficulties on Gallon Lough near Virginia at about 7.00pm.
He said two men in their 20s then swam into the lake to try to rescue them.
Marine rescue were alerted and a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
The spokesman said one of the two men was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he is in a critical condition. The search for the second man is continuing.
All four people on the boat got ashore safely.
