Police in Co Down are hunting a couple who tried to abduct a 10-year-old girl yesterday.

The child was walking home from school in Ballynahinch when a white car pulled on to the footpath beside her. A man was driving the vehicle while a woman in the passenger seat opened the door, blocking the girl's path.

She also asked the youngster's name, offered her a sweet and then a lift, police said.

When the girl refused and ran off she heard the woman shouting after her.

Both would-be abductors are aged between 20 and 30, a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said.

She added that the car the couple were in failed to start several times before finally driving off from the Beechgrove area, close to a filling station.
