SWEDEN: Mr Per Olof Svensson, the man arrested by Swedish police on suspicion of murdering the country's Foreign Minister, Ms Anna Lindh, will be released today unless enough evidence has been gathered.

Police have received the results of his DNA test but have refused to comment on them. If his test matches DNA found on a cap believed to be that of the murderer, the suspect will almost certainly be detained further.

Under Swedish law, police have three days to question Mr Svensson.

Thereafter, their level of suspicion must be raised to detain the suspect further. It means that police must have gathered enough evidence to regard the man as the "probable" killer, rather than just have "a reasonable suspicion".

Mr Svensson was arrested on Tuesday night near a football stadium in the northern Stockholm suburb of Solna. His background has been extensively reported in the Swedish and worldwide media since his arrest. "It's very unusual for us to see this," said Mr Lars Grönskog, police spokesperson for the investigation.

Ms Anna Lindh was fatally stabbed last week while shopping in the NK department store in central Stockholm. A memorial service will take place later today at Stockholm's town hall with Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Cowen, representing the Government.

Close to 1,300 guests from around the world will attend.

The US Secretary of State, Mr Colin Powell, had to cancel his trip to Stockholm for the service, due to Hurricane Isabel.

Security will be tight for the event. "We have to increase security to a much higher level than normal, considering recent events," said Ms Paula Burreau, press secretary for the Swedish Prime Minister.

"Security has been tightened for all our ministers in the last week," she added.

A private funeral will take place over the weekend - most likely in Ms Lindh's hometown Nyköping. The media has been asked to stay away from the ceremony.
