A elderly man has died after a traffic crash in Dublin's city centre.

The man, who was in his 70s, was struck by a bus on the North Quays earlier this afternoon.

Gardaí closed off the road between Ormond Quay and Capel St near the Ha'penny Bridge following the incident, which took place shortly before 4pm.

Gardaí said the route is unlikely to open for some time.

Elsewhere, gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a 44-year-old woman was killed in a single vehicle crash near Macroom, Co Cork this afternoon.

The victim, named as Martina O' Driscoll, was from the Ballincollig area. She was fatally injured when her car collided with a tree at Shandangan, Carrigadrohid at about 1.45pm.

She was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she died of her injuries.
