A leading US commander has said Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden has not been sighted for a week and could be dead in Afghanistan, but the United States had no firm information.

General Tommy Franks said: "I can't say that I or someone I know has physically laid eyes on Osama bin Laden in the past week".

"There really are only about three possibilities. He can be in Tora Bora or in that area dead, he can be somewhere else in Afghanistan and still alive or perhaps he may have gotten over into Pakistan".

But General Franks saidthe United States was uncertain about his fate.

"Right now we don't know which of those three categories he's in".
