An Italian man who barricaded himself in his apartment after killing a neighbour last night murdered his wife and turned the gun on himself today, officials said.

Andrea Calderini (31) yesterday rang his neighbour's bell and shot the woman (65) dead when she opened the door.

He then went into the street in the smart Fiera neighbourhood and shot at people on scooters and bicycles, wounding two seriously and one lightly.

Mr Calderini returned to his apartment and fired shots from the window at people in the street, including some running to the aid of his earlier victims. A siege followed, with Mr Calderini's parents and police trying to persuade him to surrender.

"Police marksmen burst into the apartment a little after midnight and found the bodies of the man and his wife," Milan's deputy mayor Mr Riccardo De Corato told reporters.

Neighbours said the man had long suffered from mental problems.

Last Friday another gunman, also said to be mentally ill, shot dead five people in Sicily before killing himself.
