On November 15th, 2005, Frank Byrne identified his son to gardaí, after fingerprints initially confirmed who he was. The inquest heard the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis found  Byrne had died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The men were shot in Carrigwood estate in Firhouse after they stopped their vehicle at the end of a cul-de-sac.
