Mandate trade union has called off planned strike action at Argos stores tomorrow following discussions with management at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC) .

In a statement this evening, the union said a set of proposals was agreed by both parties late last Friday in a bid to avert industrial action in the dispute over pay.

As a result, the union said, it had called off tomorrow's strike action and would ballot its members early in the New Year on the proposed package.

The union had insisted that, up until last year, it had an agreement with the company under which both sides would discuss pay increases.

But it claims the company abandoned this process and reverted to the national wage agreement. The union had sought a 10 per cent pay increase for staff, more than that available under the Towards 2016 agreement.

Argos had maintained it was following the Towards 2016 agreement and that this had been ratified by the LRC and the Labour Court.
